Sea Holly - Blue

(Eryngium planum)

Blue Sea Holly is a striking and unusual herbaceous perennial in the carrot family (Apiaceae). Native to central/southeastern Europe and Central Asia, it is highly prized by gardeners for its metallic-blue, thistle-like flowerheads and architectural, spiky foliage.

Growing Conditions:

• Sunlight: Thrives in full sun minimum of 6 hours daily.
• Soil: Prefers dry to medium-moisture, well-drained soils. It tolerates poor, rocky, and sandy soils.
• Transplanting: Due to a deep taproot, plant in its permanent spot initially, as it resents being moved. 

• Fertilizer: Avoid fertilizing; rich soil causes weak, sprawling, or less vibrant plants. 
• Maintenance: Deadhead flowers to prevent excessive self-seeding, though they provide winter interest. 

• Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9
• Water: Highly drought-tolerant once established
• Size: Grows to approximately 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 1.5 feet wide. 

Sea Holly blooms from mid-summer to early fall, attracting a wide variety of pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Because of its rigid, papery blooms, it is widely utilized as an accent plant in borders, in drought-tolerant rock gardens, and as a dried flower in floral arrangements.
