A little about Sunflowers....

These Seed Bombs have a variety of Sunflowers in them so that you get a range of colors and shades of short and tall sunflowers. The strong stemmed blooms grow on tall branching plants producing an abundance of cut flowers for casual bouquets. Use as a backdrop for shorter plantings, as a temporary hedge, or for color in the vegetable garden. Plus they offer nectar and pollen to foraging bees, butterflies and native pollinators, armfuls of blossoms for bouquets and oil-rich seed heads to sustain songbirds through winter. Plant sunflowers in a sunny location in somewhat fertile and well-drained soil. Keep soil weed-free and moderately moist while plants are young. Once established, plants are somewhat drought and heat tolerant. Will flower mid-summer through fall. Birds are attracted to the seeds.

SOWING: Sow seed bombs 1/4 inch deep, directly outdoors, after danger of frost has passed.

GERMINATION: 10 to 15 days. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.

HARVEST AND USE: For bouquets, cut when flowers just begin to open. Pollinators will visit the florets in each flower head and seeds will begin to mature. When the center disk florets have dried, birds will happily snack on ripening seed heads. For winter feeding harvest by covering ripening heads with paper bags until kernels are plump and hard shelled. Cut entire heads; store until cool and dry, then remove seeds. Store in closed containers to feed as needed.
