The Swiss Giant Pansy is a classic garden flower. Famous for its velvety, 3 to 4-inch blooms and rich "smiling face" markings, it thrives in cool weather and is a versatile, edible addition to both gardens and plates. While technically a short lived perennial they are typically grown as an annual and will easily self seed if not deadheaded. They bloom from spring and fall (blooms all winter in mild climates like Southern California. They grow 6 - 9 inches tall and wide with a vibrant mix of blue, purple, yellow, orange, red, and white, typically featuring dark, contrasting centers. They withstand light frost but may fade in severe summer heat. They like to be planted in full sun to partial shade (afternoon shade is ideal in warmer areas). They prefer moist, well-draining, loamy soil.
Pansy has a mild and fresh-taste they're great in a green salad or as a garnish.
When starting Pansies and Viola's from seed they require darkness to germinate. Plant seeds about 1/8 of an inch deep and cover tray until seeds begin to germinating. For best germination, seeds can be started indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost, or chilled in the refrigerator to break dormancy.
