Prizehead lettuce is a fast growing heirloom loose leaf variety dating back to the 1800's. It has deeply curled, light green leaves with striking bronze-red or maroon edges. Known for its sweet, tender, and famously bitter-free crunch, it matures in about 45 to 55 days.
Spacing & Depth: Plant seeds 1/4 inche deep, with plants thinned to 8 to 10 inches apart.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
Temperature: It is a cool-season crop but is noted for being relatively slow to bolt (go to seed) and having good heat tolerance.
Harvesting: Leaves can be harvested in about 45 to 55 days. Because it is a loose-leaf variety, you can practice "cut-and-come-again" harvesting by taking the outer leaves first, allowing the center to continue growing.
